The monastery was established in the 10th century by the hermit St. John of the village of Skrino, later called Rilski. The Rila holy cloister got its present appearance in the 19th century. The eastern wing of the monastery comes from the 20th century. In 1983, the Rila Monastery was declared a monument of culture by UNESCO.

The total area of the cloister takes, together with the church, the residential, and the farming buildings, 8800 square meters. The complex also includes a museum, which exhibits items providing information about the history of the monastery throughout the centuries. To this day, the holy cloister is a functioning monastery.
