Most probably the village existed since the time of the Second Bulgarian State (1185 - 1393). During the 17th century, Arbanasi rose to prominence as a trading center. The houses of wealthy traders are very interesting from the architectural point of view. They very often resembled small fortresses and allowed their inhabitants not leave the house for long periods of time. Although they might appear severe and forbidding from the outside, their interiors were quite rich, luxurious and impressive, very often stylish and heavily decorated with ornate woodworking and plaster elements.
